THE MEXICAN
CATRINA DOLL

The Mexican Catrina had its beginning in 1910 with La Calavera Catrina, an etching by Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalpe Posada. The etching was part of a series of calaveras (skulls) of contemporary figures depicted as skeletons,  often politically satiric.

The Calavera of an upper class woman wearing an elaborate large hat has become a popular figure in the Day of the Dead celebrations,  November 1 and November 2.

My Catrinas are made of papier mache, weighted, sealed with acrylic varnish and adorned with baubles, feathers and other accessories.  Aprox. 24 in tall  With photographs I will be happy to personalize one for you .

Below is an album of some of my favorites
